Bucharest Municipality signs construction contract of Piața Sudului Underpass

On 8 May, 2014, Bucharest Municipality signed the contract for the execution of construction works of Piața Sudului Underpass and the modernisation of the road infrastructure in adjacent areas. Main works involves the execution of an underground passage with two lanes per direction to link Calea Văcărești and Nițu Vasile street passing under the crossroads with Șoseaua Olteniței. Four pedestrian passageways will also be built to eliminate the crossings in the surface area. The passageways will provide connection between Piața Sudului underground station and the tram stations located on Șoseaua Olteniței. The works will also aim at modernising the trolleybus networks in the area, as well as the urban networks affected by the works. Therefore, the crossroads of Piața Sudului will be an intermodal hub with good accessibility and an easy transport system between the modes of transport in the area. The deadline for completion of works is within 18 months of the date of issue of the commencement order. The value of the project reaches RON 127 Million, RON 97 Million of which represent non-reimbursable European funds. The works are executed by Astaldi Italy which also executes the passageway at the crossroads Mihai Bravu/Splaiul Independenței, Line 5 (in association with 3 other companies) and has performed the works at Basarab Passageway (in association with another company).

However, the works to this underpass and the one in execution since 2011 at Mihai Bravu/Splaiul Independenței junction will keep the routes of tram and trolleybus in the area closed. They will be replaced by shuttle buses that do not cope with the passenger flow.
